Holidays and Accommodation in Lanzarote
There are loads of accommodation options available for anyone planning their holidays in Lanzarote this year. As this popular Canary Islands boasts hundreds of hotels and thousands of privately owed holiday villas and apartments.
Indeed the Island of Fire as it is known – thanks to its volcanic origins – has been welcoming tourists for well over forty years. Since the advent of the package holiday in the 1970´s. At the time Lanzarote was regarded as a new and exotic destination and during its heyday attracted up to 2 million foreign visitors a year.
This figure has dropped off in recent years – with 1.4 million visitors arriving on flights to Lanzarote from across Europe last year. As newer destinations such as Egypt and Turkey have started to compete for tourist numbers. But Lanzarote still remains the third most popular of the seven Canary Islands after Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Visitors can certainly select from a wide array of accommodation in Lanzarote – with about half of all tourists booking a stay in one of the islands many hotels. And the remainder plumping for private rental accommodation which is usually booked direct over the internet.
Lanzarote is a year round holiday destination thanks to the fact that it enjoys a semi tropical climate. Creating a twelve month season that means tourists can enjoy days on the beach even in December. On average temperatures are in the early 20´s Celsius all year round and there is very little in the way of rainfall, which is little surprise given the fact that the Sahara desert is located just 80 miles away in West Africa.
Lanzarote is a Spanish posession despite its location many miles south of the Iberian Peninsula and is also part of the EU. So European visitors don’t require an entry visa or any other paperwork. The islands main market is the UK which last year accounted for about half of all visitors. And is also very popular with tourists from Germany and Eire.
As well as great weather Lanzarote offers lots of beautiful beaches, delightful villages and surreal volcanic scenery to explore. As well as the many incredible creations of the famous local artist César Manrique – such as the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio. All of which were built during the 1970´s and 80´s – before the artist’s untimely death in car crash in 1992.
